Where to Start

There are so many easy and affordable (or even free!) ways to reduce your waste. Here is a list that will help you get started (or continue) on your own zero waste journey.

  • Do a waste audit. For the next few weeks, make note of what’s going in your garbage and think about ways to reduce your waste. What kind of waste are you making? How many disposable or single-use items do you use? Can any items be swapped for more sustainable packing?

  • Consume less. The best way to reduce your waste is to avoid bringing it home in the first place! Before you make that purchase, ask yourself if you really need it.

  • Shop ‘new’ less often. Buy items that are meant to last, or buy second hand. Both will reduce the number of new items you’ll need to buy, and will also reduce the clutter in your home!

  • Shop package free. Wherever you can, pick the option that comes without packaging. For example, buy the loose vegetables over the packaged ones.

  • Ditch the disposables. Find a reusable replacement for disposable and single-use items. For example, switch to beeswax wraps instead of cling film, or use reusable grocery and produce bags when you shop for groceries.

  • Bring your own containers. Find out which stores will accept your own containers. Ask at your local grocery store. Check with your butcher or local cheese shop. Shop at your local farm.

  • Shop in bulk. Go to your local bulk store and find out what they offer and how it works. You might be surprised at the wide variety of dried goods they carry!

  • Waste less food. Store your perishable foods in ways that extend their shelf life. Opt for simple recipes instead of those with rarely-used ingredients that expire before you can use them.

  • Make it yourself. Try a new food recipe to cook from scratch. Try making your own cleaners or skin care products.

  • Fix what’s broken. If you have an item that is old or in disrepair, look into getting it fixed or repurposed. Be creative in finding new uses for old things.

  • Reduce gradually. Replace items as you run out. Remember, you don’t need to switch everything at once.

  • Build new habits. Practice new habits until they become automatic. For example, remember to bring reusable grocery bags when you shop.

  • Plan ahead. Think about what reusable items you’ll need for the day. If you’re planning to go grocery shopping, what containers will you need? If you’re out and about, do you have your reusable coffee mug?
